National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa, INDIA (NIT) formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision 
of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime MInister Of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. NIT Rourkela was ranked as the second best NIT in India by TEQIP for the year 2009. Today, nearly fifty years later, NIT Rourkela continues to contribute significantly to the growth of the techno-economic strength of the country in a number of ways.
