The University of Kashmir is located on the western side of the Dal Lake in the city of Srinagar which lies in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. It was Awarded grade "A" by the NAAC.

The university occupies 263 acres (1.06 km2). Although the university arose immediately after Independence in 1948, it was in 1956 the university was established, reorganized and was granted its status. The faculties are Arts, Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Education, Commerce, Law, Medicine, Dental Surgery, Engineering, Music and Fine Arts and Non-formal Education. The University provides residential facilities - on a first-come-first-served basis to the teaching and non-teaching staff as well as to students, male and female, in hostels.

Besides the departmental libraries, the University has a central library, called Iqbal Library, with a vast collection of books, leading national and international journals and magazines and an internet facility. The location of the library at a walking distance from the departments of the University, renders it accessible to teachers, research scholars and students of the University.
